Bargaining Sample Surveys

Surveying your members to find the priority issues and their bottom line on specific issues is an important part of the bargaining process. It’s also a great way to assess member needs and one step in meeting your duty of fair representation.

Below you will find four sample surveys which have been used by different locals over the years.  Feel free to use one of them or to devise your own.  

Sample Bargaining Survey

Your bargaining team wants to hear from you.  If you have specific changes you would like to see in our master contract, please record your thoughts below and return them to your bargaining team by Friday at 4:00 PM

You may use the back of this sheet or additional pages for your responses, if needed. A follow-up survey to establish priorities for negotiations will be distributed later.
 

SAMPLE BARGAINING PRIORITY SURVEY

(Local) Education Association

This bargaining priority survey is a follow-up to the initial form each of you completed and returned. We now need to know the priority of interest in those areas most frequently selected on the previous survey. Your response is the key in helping the Association Bargaining Committee and Team establish the bargaining strategy and tactics. Directions: Please indicate your five highest priorities by placing the appropriate number on the line next to the respective issue. Use number 1 for your highest priority, number 2 for the second, etc. Please indicate only five (5) priorities and use a specific number only once. If you have any questions about an item, please contact the association representative listed below for clarification.

____  A.  Provide full recognition of experience in other school districts for placement on the salary schedule.

____  B.  Provide full medical insurance coverage for all dependents of individual employees.

____  C.  Provide dental insurance coverage for all individual employees.

____  D.  Provide three days personal leave (with pay) which may be taken without explanation.

____  E.  Establish an income protection plan for long-term disabilities after accumulated sick leave.

____  F.  Provide cost-of-living increase on the base salary.

____  G.  Provide an improved salary schedule, with an improved salary index.

____  H.  Provide adequate, efficient grievance procedure with due process and procedures.

____   I.  Establish adequate reduction-in-force procedure, including retraining and recertification opportunities.

____  J.  Establish fair evaluation procedures, including guaranteed access to individual personnel file by each employee, and the right to respond to derogatory items in file.

____  K.  Establish a well-defined student discipline procedure.

____  L.  Schedule a preparation period for each teacher during the student’s school day.

____  M.  Provide each teacher a duty-free lunch period of at least forty-five minutes.

____   Accumulate sick leave raise – from 100 to 120 days

____   Board pays teacher share of retirement contribution

Note: The above is only a sample of a local association membership survey from which would be used by the negotiating team to determine the importance attached to each item by all individuals in the local. Members should be instructed to be as honestly selfish as possible when completing the forms.
