Goals and Priorities

Distinguish between goals and priorities. Goals are the general direction and belong to the entire unit. Priorities are part of strategy and must be closely held by the team.

GOALS

  • Should be specific
  • Should be obtainable
  • Should be consistent 
  • Can be long term
  • Should be broadly representative. ASK - is this desirable for all?
  • Members must support goals
  • Announce and publish goals to members

Remember: The employer will have goals too. Attempt to learn what the employer will seek. Be prepared to address employer concerns.

PRIORITIES

  • Should be confidential
  • More immediately attainable than goals
  • Must be realistic
  • Move from general areas to specifics
