Bargaining Team Roles

The Bargaining Team – Who’s Who?

President

  • Coordinates the overall program and action of the association so they are consistent with the strategy, tactics, and priorities used by the bargaining team.
  • Communicates with the membership as local leader following receipt of information from the bargaining team.
  • Delegates responsibility so that the bargaining team needs are met (i.e. support teams, information, research, etc.)

Chief Negotiator

  • Speaks on behalf of the association at the bargaining table.
  • Keeps the president informed at every step.
  • Efficiently utilizes the resources provided by the president.

Secretary

  • Takes notes on relevant points, commentary regarding proposals and counter-proposals, times of commencement of bargaining, caucuses, recesses, meal breaks and conclusion of bargaining.

Strategizer

  • Sits beside the spokesperson and passes notes which may suggest a caucus or use of certain verbal skills.
  • Functions as a second pair of eyes and ears and helps formulate strategy.

Board Watcher

  • Ready and interprets board’s reactions.
  • Observes body language and attempts to put it into the context and perspective of opportunity.

Public Relations Advisor

  • Records statements made by the board which might be used against it in a public relations sense.
