SDEA is sponsoring five legislative days during the 2018 Legislative Session. Each of the five day is set aside for one of each of the UniServ regions. However, if that date doesn’t work for you consider joining us during one of the other four days.

Prior to Lobby Day
Please contact your legislators prior to your arrival in Pierre. If you are making an initial contact, introduce yourself as an educator from their legislative district and perhaps share some information about what is happening at your local school. You may also want to offer to be a resource if they have questions about your school during the session. Inform the legislators of your attendance at a Lobby Day and invite them to join you for lunch at the SDEA building on the day of your visit. SDEA is providing lunch to all Lobby Day participants and any of their legislators who wish to join them. You may also want to ask the legislators if there is an appropriate time to meet them when you are at the Capitol.
Activities in Pierre
All those attending a 2018 Lobby Day are asked to attend a legislative briefing at the SDEA building the evening you arrive in Pierre. Dinner will start at 7:30 pm. The legislative briefing and training will begin at 8:00 pm and will last about an hour. SDEA lobbyists will go over the latest happenings at the Capitol followed by some tips and strategies for lobbying your legislators.
The next day’s activities will begin early. Participants will gather at SDEA at 7:00 a.m. and proceed to the Capitol at 7:30 am. Members are encouraged to start looking for their local legislators as soon as they arrive at the Capitol. If your legislators are not available, you are encouraged to visit with other legislators who may be on the floor. Senate Education meets on Tuesday mornings and House Education meets on Tuesday mornings. You can listen to part of the committee meeting; however, you are encouraged to spend most of your time talking with legislators.
Participants are encouraged to stay until the House and Senate convene their floor sessions at 2:00 pm. A firm schedule for the day will be provided at the Monday evening meeting
Travel and Accommodations
SDEA has reserved rooms for participants. Rooms are double occupancy. If available, participants may request single room, but are responsible for half of the cost. SDEA will provide dinner on the evening you arrive in Pierre along with lunch the following day. The hotel provides a continental breakfast.
To save costs, participants are asked to car pool with fellow members. Your UniServ Director will help coordinate who is riding with whom. Mileage will be paid to the driver. You will not be reimbursed if you choose to drive separately when there is a car pool option.
