Award recipients demonstrate excellence in teaching, advocacy, community engagement, and professional leadership.
“Ann exemplifies what it means to be a teacher leader. Her classroom is a place where students are not only engaged in science but inspired to think critically and creatively,” said SDEA President Stephanie Hageman. “Ann’s ability to connect with her students and make learning meaningful is extraordinary. Beyond her classroom, she is a respected voice among educators and a dedicated advocate for public education through her work with BEA and SDEA. Her leadership uplifts her colleagues and strengthens our profession across South Dakota.”
Anderson’s teaching philosophy centers on connection and care. “When students are in my classroom, they’re part of my team,” she says. “We focus on learning, having fun, and supporting one another. Every student brings their own story, and I want them to know they’re seen and supported.”
As the 2026 recipient, Anderson will represent SDEA as its nominee for the NEA Foundation Awards for Teaching Excellence. First, she receives the SDEA award at the state level. Then, her nomination advances to the national level with the NEA Foundation, which recognizes exceptional teaching and advocacy. Anderson will attend the NEA Foundation’s 2027 Salute to Excellence in Education Gala in Washington, DC. At this event, five national finalists receive the Horace Mann Awards for Teaching Excellence and $10,000 each. From these finalists, one is selected for the NEA Member Benefits Award for Teaching Excellence, earning $25,000 and a commemorative gift.
