From Our School Buildings to the Capitol
Visiting South Dakota schools over the past three months has reminded me that SDEA’s greatest strength is our members and our shared commitment to public education. I have seen you welcome new educators, support students and families, and create environments where every student can learn, grow, and succeed.
Your dedication, collaboration, and advocacy bring our mission to life: ensuring the collective voice for South Dakota public education professionals. Together, we pursue our vision of valued education professionals providing quality public education for all students.
From Our Schools to the State Capitol
With the general election behind us, we look to the work ahead. Our collective efforts have strengthened public education’s voice and built connections with legislators who value thriving public schools. Encouragingly, legislators are asking SDEA members how they can support our schools and students.
Students remain our shared priority, even when solutions differ. We have been asked what legislation could improve student success, what mental health supports schools need, and what challenges educators face that require state-level attention. Sharing our experiences and expertise helps decisionmakers understand what schools need to succeed.
Stronger Together, Focused on What Matters Most
Funding, student behavior, and the resources and support to meet every student’s needs will be key priorities in the coming year. Solutions will take time, but collaboration with families, communities, policymakers, and other education stakeholders can help us find common ground and move solutions forward.
Your experiences, voice, and engagement help shape public education in South Dakota. SDEA empowers educators, strengthens the education workforce, and influences decisions at every level by advocating for adequate funding, safe and supportive learning environments, professional development, and policies recognizing educators’ knowledge and expertise. Every member has a role.
Celebrating Every Member, Every Role
As your SDEA President, I could not be prouder of the professionals who make our schools work. Our custodians maintain safe environments; office staff welcome students and families; transportation professionals get students to school safely; and nutrition services staff provide meals so students are ready to learn. Our paraprofessionals, teachers, counselors, school specialists, and other education professionals provide the support and encouragement students need to reach their potential.
Every role is essential; every contribution matters. Together, we represent education professionals across South Dakota and help educators thrive and continue serving students. Listening, learning from one another, standing together, and advocating for quality public education for every child bring our shared values to life.
Our Work, Our Voice, Our Future
I encourage you to stay connected, celebrate your schools’ successes, speak up about challenges, and build connections with public education decisionmakers. Our work is more powerful together.
Your dedication, expertise, and commitment to students and public education strengthen our profession. Thank you. Together, we elevate public education and create opportunities for every student to succeed.
From our school buildings to the State Capitol, we are stronger together. And at the heart of everything we do, it will always be about our students.
