“We are disappointed that Governor Rhoden proposed a budget that freezes funding for South Dakota’s public schools. Our schools already face budget cuts for next year, and the uncertainty of federal funding only adds to the challenge. Last year’s funding increase failed to keep pace with inflation, putting districts in a tight spot.
Educators are committed to providing every student with the support they need and deserve. However, when funding fails to keep pace with inflation, schools are forced to make tough choices—and ultimately, students lose out.
That said, we know the Governor’s budget address is just the beginning of the process. There is still a long way to go before the final budget is approved in March. We look forward to working with legislators over the next couple of months. Educators will engage with their local lawmakers to share stories from their districts and explain how a funding freeze will affect students.
We urge lawmakers to keep students' needs at the heart of every decision. Now is the time to secure the funding our schools and students truly deserve. We are committed to advocating for students until the final budget reflects their needs.”
