Celebrating the Heart of Public Education During American Education Week

As we celebrate American Education Week, I encourage everyone in South Dakota to take a moment to recognize the amazing work happening in our public schools. This tradition reminds us that education is about more than just classrooms and textbooks. It’s about people: the teachers who inspire, the support staff who keep things running, the parents who support learning, and the community members who cheer on our students. By working together, we build strong schools and strong communities.

Public education is one of the most important investments we make as a society. It gives students the chance to succeed in a world that is changing quickly. But this work is not done alone. It takes all of us—educators, families, and communities—working together to make sure every child has the resources and support they need.

American Education Week is not just a celebration. It is also a call to action. Each day of the week focuses on a different part of the school community:

  • Monday, November 17: Kickoff Day. This day honors public education and the people who make it possible.
  • Tuesday, November 18: Family Day. Families are invited to visit classrooms and see what a day is like for students.
  • Wednesday, November 19: Education Support Professionals Day. On this day, we thank bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers, and paraprofessionals for all they do.
  • Thursday, November 20: Educator for a Day. Community members can try being an educator and see for themselves the dedication it takes.
  • Friday, November 21: Substitute Educators Day. This is a chance to thank those who step in and help keep learning going.

These themes remind us that education is something we all share. When we work together, we make both our schools and our communities stronger. Good public schools help build a better workforce and a brighter future for South Dakota.

This week, you can support your local public school by writing a thank-you note to a teacher or support staff member, going to a school event, volunteering, or sharing a positive story about your school online. These simple actions show real appreciation for those who care for our children’s education. Let’s make our gratitude clear and meaningful. Start today.

I have spent 28 years in public education, starting as a para-educator, then working as a custodian, later as a classroom teacher, and now as the President of the South Dakota Education Association. I know firsthand the challenges and rewards of this work. I have seen how a caring adult can change a student’s life. I have watched educators go above and beyond every day. I have also learned that when communities support their schools, great things happen.

As the world changes quickly, we need to make sure our schools have the resources they need. Our students deserve the best chances to grow, learn, and succeed. This takes commitment from everyone.

During American Education Week, let’s notice and celebrate the good things happening in South Dakota’s schools. Thank the educators, support staff, parents, and community members who make public education possible. When we invest in schools, we invest in our future.
