Two Cents Worth
Tip from Lola
I learned this technique at Red River High School in Grand Forks, North Dakota, while observing other teachers as part of an in-service. The economics class was going to discuss a video they had watched about the Enron scandal, and the teacher distributed two pennies to every student. Everyone had to give his or her 'two cents worth' on Enron. Each student had to have a comment or question in order to turn in his/her pennies, and had to turn them in by the end of the discussion. It really worked well, forcing the quiet ones to participate, and limiting the eager ones to contemplate their thoughts before spending their pennies.
