MICHAEL ANDERSON
SDEA Student Program President

Welcome to a new school year with the SDEA student program!  This year is guaranteed to be an exciting one with our fall conference at Augustana in Sioux Falls on October 13th, followed by the Connections Conference in Louisville, Kentucky the weekend of November 9-11.  Also, make sure when you are planning next summer to include a trip to Washington, D.C. for the NEA Student Leadership Conference June 26-29.

I am fortunate to work with a wonderful crew in Rich Mittelstedt, who is the student program director; president-elect Jason Whiting; and the most efficient and organized person I know -- Colleen McIntosh as our secretary and treasurer.  As you plan your local chapter events we encourage you to let us know about them, and let us know if there is anything we can do to help.  We would love to come visit your campus!

Thank you for all of your hard work and effort that you put into the SDEA Student Program.  Get excited for the new year!

The National Education Association Student Program strives to:

  • promote community partnerships
  • foster leadership through pre-professional opportunities and peer mentoring
  • promote membership among diverse populations
  • provide networking opportunities
  • supplement formal teacher-education training
  • promote the national accreditation of teacher-education training
  • recruit and retain pre-professional members, and
  • maintain a presence at all NEA conferences.

The NEA Student Program is Essential

By 2007, nearly 2 million teachers across the country will retire. We must take aggressive steps to replace these educators and ensure a quality teacher in every classroom. NEA supports teachers who are well qualified and prepared for their careers.
