HEALTH CARE

-      A proposal to provide eight weeks of paid parental leave to federal employees was cut to four weeks by a key House Democrat yesterday as Republicans expressed concerns about the benefit's cost.

-      The U.S. must emphasize healthcare delivery, not just basic and clinical science research.

-      By Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.), wrote an op-ed for The Hill saying Medicare should not be the model for health care reform.

-      The Bush administration has threatened to veto a bill that would block it from implementing seven controversial regulations that states say would shift Medicaid costs to them.

LABOR

-      A conflict between the AFL-CIO and SEIU regarding the California Nurses Association has intensified.

-      Business and labor groups have taken last year’s expensive lobbying fight over secret ballots and unions to campaigns across the country, as both sides highlight research suggesting candidates would be better off embracing their positions.  

POLITICS

-      Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) said in a statement yesterday that his cancer has returned. 

-      The battle between Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama over whether Mr. Obama belittled voters in small towns appears to have hardened the views of both candidates’ supporters and stirred anxiety among many Democrats about the party’s prospects in the fall.

PRESCRIPTION DRUGS

-      Two medical-journal studies suggest Merck & Co. violated scientific-publishing ethics by ghostwriting dozens of academic articles, and minimized the impact of patient deaths in its analyses of some human trials of a top-selling drug later linked to cardiac problems.

RETIREES

-      Martha Stewart will provide her personal experience and celebrity status when a Senate committee reviews on Wednesday how the government should expand and train its long-term care workforce.

-      The House Education and Labor Committee will mark up legislation Wednesday aimed at increasing disclosure of fees associated with 401(k) retirement savings plans.
